Why do we polish timber?
It is an extra step, or steps, that most woodworkers don’t find at all pleasant. It’s smelly and sticky. And all sorts of things can go wrong. In additions for finishing wood: to help keep it clean, to help become stable it and to garnish it.
Wood is spongy material. It contains countless holes of countless sizes. These holes can accumulate dirt and grime from handling, atmospheric contaminants, and food. Grimy lumber is unpleasant, and it can be a health hazard, providing a breeding area for bacteria. A polish seals the spongy surface, making it less susceptible to soiling and easier to clean.
In addition being permeable, timber is hygroscopic, it absorbs and releases humidity. dampness within lumber is called dampness content; dampness in the environment is either liquid water or water vapor (humidity). Lumber responds to changes in the level of dampness around it. If you put very dry lumber in water or in an area of high humidity, the timber will absorb humidity and swell. If you put a lumber that has a high dampness content in a relatively dry climate, the wood will release humidity and shrink.
. A good finish reduces the extremes of variation that would otherwise occur during seasonal humidity changes, but it doesn’t stop these variations.
